Pc AntiX
Hi,

I've got a 5c that came to me stuck on recovery mode. Unknown history.

I've also got a iPhone 6 that was working today which belongs to the misses but has not used it in sometime and forgot the passcode.

I've entered DFU Mode on both but none will restore beyond flashing the baseband.
I feel unlucky having two that are the same.

Is there anything I can do? I've used iTunes, 3utools and Aiseesoft and none can solve this one for me. I've tried the heat method with a hair dryer as well as cooling the phone down.

Any help or ideas?

Hi,

I haven't commented up till now as I don't know how useful this will be to you.

I have seen similar behaviour twice now. The first time was quite a while ago and I don't remember which model Iphone, but the similarities were that it was stuck in DFU and would not restore through Itunes and 3u would hang at the same % each time.
The second time was more recent, and was on an Iphone 6+. Again wouldn't restore and the phone was only stable when in recovery mode.
On both Iphones when they were plugged into a usb multimeter (drok), at some point current draw would be up and down like crazy and the voltage was spiking. On the 6 it was visible outside recovery mode. On the other Iphone it happened when 3u hung.

This behaviour suggests there may be a short to ground, likely on one of the power rails. I cant remember if I ever found the cause on the first Iphone but the 6+ had long screw damage. I think that at some point during restore the Iphone detects a problem with the power management and effectively shuts down and tries to reboot (A boot loop that will never happen while in DFU hence the freeze).
Hope this may help or at least give you some pointers on how to proceed further.

It's always worth trying a known good battery. I keep a new one with full charge for any software work.
Once fully working you can replace the battery with whatever you like and keep the good one for the next time.
Same goes with the cable. The only real Apple cable I have is carefully sealed in a bag for software work.
My PC has both USB 2 and 3 sockets. I try them both.
Then there's the lucky white heather...

Cheers, Neil
